Beyond Four Walls: The aftermath of the hurricane

In the aftermath of a hurricane, we are humbled by our vulnerability to the immense power of nature. As witnesses rather than victims of the catastrophe, it serves as a harsh reminder to cherish what we have and develop a deeper appreciation for it. Reminding us that everything we hold dear could be gone in an instant.

Aftermath hurricane

Year after year, we witness the wreckage the aftermath of a hurricane leaves in their wake, as if it is a lottery that nobody wants to win, a russian roulette played by nature which is constantly forging in the Caribbean sea and unleashing over the lands that emerge from its waters.

Hundreds of families are left without homes, abandoned helpless and exposed near what’s left of their once called homes…and in that moment of sadness…in between the feeling of hopelessness…it grows an epiphany, something similar to a revelation that reminds us of the importance of what’s lost, something today only generates us nostalgia.

Many would say: “material things are recovered… at least we’re alive” in the middle of the devastation, and that is an irrefutable statement, after all, life will always be the most important thing. But when we reduce the feeling attached to our house, our place to live, our home, to just “a material thing”, we are making a mistake, because it is not just something material… it’s rooted to a much deeper meaning.

Because what is a “house” really? Is it merely an architectural structure where we happen to live? Just a roof to protect us from the weather? Or the space between four walls that we consider our own? Thinking about it technically will tell you the answer for this is: yes, in truth, people consider their houses as so much more on an emotional and psychological level. Foursome, according to various psychology studies, events such as: forced migrations, sudden destruction of a house, the aftermath of a hurricane, or the obligation of moving out from your home are among the top traumas for a human being.

Hurricane aftermath

Since for us, beneath a house roof and in between its four walls, families are built, bonds are created, and memories are made. Houses aren’t something immobile and inert, they live and you and your family are the organs keeping them alive. Therefore, we feel them as a member of our own families. They are our guardians, mothers that rock us to sleep at night, the fathers that make us feel protected and the spaces in which we surrender to sleep without fearing the threat of secret predators lurking in the shadows waiting for our most vulnerable moment to attack.

They’ve witnessed the most intimate and special memories of our lives… watching us grow, crawl, walk and fall. Encased in its walls, will always echo the laughter and tears it heard from us when we laughed or cried. Beneath its roof, there will always be sheltered memories of those moments of passion we hold with our beloved. Outside its windows, it will always lay a reminder to go outside and savor the good weather while it lasts.

So when we pass by a street at night and see the warm illuminated windows and imagine all the life that it encapsulates: moments as ordinary as a family eating together during a lovely evening, enjoying and dancing, or sitting and smiling in front of the glow of a screen; we understand the special sentiment attached to it.

Because a house is not just something “material”; it’s the sum of energy, emotion and memories that we call our home. And for that reason, it deserves to be treated as a member of our family, especially through the aftermath of a hurricane, worrying about its health just as much as we would care for one another. Allowing it to deteriorate, be damaged or suffer, as a consequence of our inaction? Is only betraying ourselves and the memories we have made in it.

Instead, caring for and tending to our place reflects gratitude and appreciation, an honest retribution for all that we are given each day. Maintaining it healthy will save us from further problems, reducing vulnerabilities and reinforcing its structure, protecting us for when natural forces try to overtake us by surprise again.

Treasure your house, value your home.
Give it the genuine importance which it deserves in your life.
