Are you sick from mold exposure?

black mold

If you live in a damp area like Miami you’ve probably been exposed to mold, and it might not have been serious to your health yet. This could be for various reasons, you might have a healthy immune system, may have had very little mold exposure… or maybe you’re part of the lucky ones.

The health symptoms for mold exposure can range from moderate to severe depending on the species of mold and the toxins it is producing, also an individual’s immune system plays a very important role in this, because there isn’t just one illness from mold exposure. In fact, mold can affect health in various and different ways:

(A) Allergic reaction:

This is the most common, maybe a lot of people have had allergies by mold exposure thinking it was just “flu” or “cold”.

Symptoms could be:

  • Headache
  • Eye irritation
  • Sneezing
  • Itching
  • Skin redness
  • Skin rash

(B) Invasive Fungal infection:

This is when fungal organisms enter the body and invade through the tissue. If the immune system is compromised these fungi grow and spread locally. Organisms like yeast and some molds can invade the blood vessels causing infection in the bloodstream and distant organs.

Symptoms typically manifest as:

  • Fever and Chills
  • Chest or joint pain
  • Coughing up blood
  • Shortness of breath / asthma
  • Skin lesions
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Nose bleeds

(C) Mycotoxicosis:

This is when exposure to mold substances or mycotoxins leads to intoxication.

While different strains of mycotoxins produce varying symptoms in people, many of the main ones are:

  • Difficulty with digestion
  • Difficulty digesting proteins
  • Damage to the immune system.
  • Damage to the lungs.
  • Postration
  • Ataxia
  • Loss of coordination
  • Vertigo
  • Vomiting

(D) Advanced & Long term Effects:

If the exposure to mold is maintained and persists over time the symptoms may develop and worsen to the following:

In advanced exposure:

  • Nervous disorders
  • Heart palpitations
  • Blurred visión
  • Swollen glands
  • Weight loss
  • Depression
  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Thyroid conditions

In Long term exposure:

  • Blindness
  • Pneumonitis
  • Histoplasmosis
  • Bleeding lungs
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver disease
  • Cancer
mold exposure

All these symptoms and illnesses may vary because of factors such as:

  • Time of mold exposure:
Mold ultra-fine particles build up in the human body over time. The longer you are in a mold contaminated space the higher the risk and the probability to damage your health.
  • Mold spore levels:
Concentrated amounts of mold spores can amplify mold symptoms.
  • Types of Mold Toxins:
Molds produce dangerous toxins called mycotoxins that will attach to fine and ultrafine mold spore particles making them extremely difficult to remove from the human body. Mycotoxins have been classified as a carcinogen by the CDC and EPA.
  • Immune system of the person:
Without a doubt, your immune system will dictate how severe mold symptoms can be. Always, to have a strong immune system will give you advantage in any circumstance.

If after reading this, you think you’re sick from mold exposure, we recommend you to do 2 things first:

1. Do a mycotoxin test: this testing could be run both medically and environmentally, so this will show not only if you are sick from mold but also if your home is contaminated.

2. Do an inspection: A mitigation company will detect through many methods if there is any presence of mold in your house, if that’s the case, they will stop and solve the cause of the mold origin, and finally will get rid of the mold immediately.
