The Real 'Last of Us': Is Toxic Black Mold a Threat to Your Home?

In the world famous video game and HBO’s series “The last of us”, is depicted a world where an outbreak of a mutant Cordyceps fungus ravages the United States, transforming its human hosts into infected, aggressive and cannibal creatures… something like an unreal zombie apocalypse that no one will think possible in real life, right?
Well… let me tell you the fungus they show in the story is real, not its mutation though, at least no yet. But the truth is that there are many fungi species which can infect and control some animal hosts, just like is depicted in the series but in ants, wasps, and other insects instead of humans.
So, what stops this fungus from infecting a human? The answer is “temperature” and “complexity”. The internal human body temperature is much higher than those of ants and insects, but also our bodies are so much more complex.
What is scary is that fungi are constantly evolving and mutating in order to adapt to the environment they live in, and there are many types of fungi that are constantly exposed to human presence, sharing their same spaces, living in their bathroom and hidden in every crack and corner of the house. Yes, we are talking about mold.
Molds are a microscopic type of fungi that live on organic material, they stick to building structures because of the humidity. So, could mold evolve and mutate, developing heat resistance and adapting to be inside our bodies? We are sorry to tell you, but that has already happened.
There have been many known cases where mold has been found alive, growing and spreading inside a human body, luckily the fungus species founded aren’t the ones that control it host… but it seems that mutations are happening fast. In the last decade has been found several respiratory illnesses related to dampness and mold exposure. The fact is that are more than 500 fungal species that are harmful to humans, some of those pose ingestion threat Like Aspergillus, skin infection threat Like Trichophyton, however, the kings of inhalational threats are “Black Molds” usually led by one of the most known toxic mold in the U.S, Stachybotrys Chartarum.
Here’s a fact. Of the 21.8 million people reported to have asthma in the U.S., approximately 4.6 million cases are estimated to be attributable to dampness and mold exposure in the home.
We don’t know if Cordyceps will eventually adapt to the point it could infect a human being and control it, but toxic mold like Stachybotrys is already evolving, adapting and harming the population to the alarming point that could easily fit to a Sci-Fi story of a HBO’s series.
Mold is constantly spreading in your walls, ceiling and floorings and soon will gain access to the inside of your body, rotting you from the inside out and making you feel sick, tired and weak.
